5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology, succeeding 4G. The technical standards for 5G were developed by the 3GPP in cooperation with the ITU's IMT-2020 program. 5G supports massive connectivity for sensors and machines, commonly referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). 5G is being used to provide fixed wireless access for home Internet access. 5G has built-in security features, such as encryption and authentication, to protect user data.
